Holiday Smiles: A Quick End-of-Year Check-In

The holidays are here — and so are the cookies, chocolates, and “just one more” treats. Good news: research shows cavities care more about how often you snack than how much.¹ So enjoy dessert, just don’t nibble your way from December 1st to January 1st.

If you’re sipping champagne, mulled wine, or anything acidic, remember: enamel softens briefly afterward.² Rinse with water and wait about 30 minutes before brushing. A tiny pause now saves enamel later.

Late nights make skipping brushing tempting, but studies are clear: ditching your nighttime routine spikes plaque and inflammation.³ Two minutes before bed beats a January spent fixing preventable problems. And please — for the love of your molars — don’t use your teeth to open packaging or crack nuts. Holiday dental emergencies always begin with “I thought it would be fine…”

Cold weather and festive drinks dry out your mouth, raising cavity risk.⁴ A little extra water helps. Your teeth are not fans of winter dehydration, no matter how cheerful your mug of mulled wine looks.

As for New Year’s Resolutions? Keep them simple: brush twice a day, floss once, use fluoride, and keep up with your exams and cleanings. Consistency beats perfection — in dentistry and in life. If you want an easy “win,” start the year with a fresh toothbrush and a firm plan not to skip your bedtime routine, no matter how good the series cliffhanger is.

Thanks for being part of our Park Blvd Dentistry family this year. Wishing you warm holidays, joyful gatherings, and a bright, healthy start to the new year.

We will be taking a few days off around Christmas, so if something is bothering you, please don’t wait!
