New Year, New Goals: Why Your Smile is the Best Resolution for 2026

By Dr. Paul Doodes – Dental Health Matters, Park Blvd Dentistry

It’s that time of year again. The celebrations are all cleared up and we’re all looking at our calendars, setting goals, and perhaps feeling that familiar January spark to start fresh. While most resolutions focus on the gym or the kitchen, have you thought about your smile? It could be the resolution that sticks. At Park Blvd Dentistry, we believe your oral health is a vital part of your overall wellness. It’s not just about “fixing teeth”—it’s about preserving your health, your confidence, and your comfort. Because our articles always come from questions we hear in the office, I wanted to share a few evidence-based resolutions that are actually easy to keep.

1. Resolve to Master the Technique – Not Just the Routine

We all know we should brush twice a day, but how you brush matters just as much as how often. Research shows that techniques like the Modified Bass Technique—angling your bristles at 45 degrees toward the gumline—are far more effective at reducing plaque and inflammation than simply “scrubbing” the surfaces of the teeth. To make this resolution stick, I suggest giving yourself those full two minutes by using an electric brush with a pressure sensor. It essentially does the hard work for you, ensuring you aren’t “attacking” your gums while still hitting that 45-degree angle.

2. Make Interdental Cleaning a “Family Culture”

I often tell my patients (and my own kids) that if you aren’t flossing, your teeth simply aren’t clean. It sounds simple, but it isn’t always easy to build the habit. My advice for 2026 is to make it part of your “family culture.” When kids see their parents prioritize oral hygiene, it becomes something “we just do,” like saying please and thank you. Whether it’s traditional floss or an interdental brush, the goal is to find a tool you actually like and use it consistently; that is what ultimately reverses that “pink in the sink” and keeps your gums healthy for the long haul.

3. Commit to Addressing the “Quiet” Problems

Sometimes a tooth doesn’t hurt, but it’s “talking” to you through a slight crack, a worn edge, or a bit of sensitivity. In dentistry, prevention is the foundation. Small issues are almost always easier (and more conservative) to fix than large ones. At our PBD we use modern digital imaging and same-day technology to catch these quiet issues early. If your resolution is to be more efficient with your time, you’ll appreciate that we can often complete restorations in a single, unhurried visit—eliminating the need for more extensive work.

4. Reconnect with Your Dental Team

If it’s been a while since your last check-up, don’t let a sense of guilt stop you from making an appointment. Our boutique approach means we provide a calm, private atmosphere where we focus on you as a person, not a number. We take the time to listen, examine everything from your occlusion (how your teeth bite together) to oral cancer screenings, and build a relationship with you. Resolving to stay on top of your professional cleanings is the easiest way to ensure your smile stays functional and pain-free all year long.

Bottom Line

A healthy smile isn’t about perfection; it’s about preservation and function. Whether you want to brighten your smile for the New Year or just ensure everything is working as it should, we’re right here at PBD to help.

Happy New Year from all of us! If you have any questions or want us to take a look, feel free to reach out.
